Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
